Dan Lok | Dan Lok Notes

They’re Not Buying Your Product. They’re Buying Your Certainty.

Your prospect isn’t evaluating your product first. They’re evaluating you first, and they’ve made an emotional read on one question before they’ve processed a single feature: do you actually believe this is right for them?

Doubt leaks before you know it’s leaking, in posture, pace, and tone, long before you say the wrong word or hedge on price. And doubt is contagious. Conviction is equally contagious. When a salesperson is genuinely certain, not aggressive, not pushy, but genuinely certain, it creates a completely different energy, and the prospect feels held rather than at risk. Dan names the mistake he watches constantly: salespeople who prepare for every objection, memorize every script, study the product backward and forward, then walk into the conversation half-believing what they’re saying, and none of that preparation matters once it does. The test he recommends before every sales call isn’t “do I want this sale,” it’s “do I believe this is the right outcome for this person.”

What You’ll Learn:

  • Why prospects evaluate the seller’s belief before the product itself
  • How doubt and conviction both transmit before a word is spoken
  • Why memorized scripts and objection prep can’t compensate for half-belief
  • The one honest question to ask before every sales conversation
  • What to do if your honest answer to that question is no

"Doubt leaks before you know it's leaking. And doubt is contagious."

- Dan Lok

I want to tell you something that changed how I think about selling entirely.
Your prospect is not evaluating your product first. They’re evaluating you first.
Before they’ve processed a single feature. Before they’ve compared your price to a competitor. Before they’ve thought logically about whether this makes sense for them — they’ve already made an emotional read on one specific thing: do you believe this?
Not do you believe in your company. Not do you believe you’re a good person. Do you believe, specifically, that what you’re offering is the right thing for this person in front of you?
Because if you don’t — they feel it. Before you say the wrong word. Before you rush past an objection. Before you hedge on the price or soften your close. They feel it in your posture, your pace, your tone. Doubt leaks before you know it’s leaking.
And doubt is contagious.
Conviction is equally contagious. When a salesperson is genuinely certain — not aggressive, not pushy, but genuinely certain — it creates a completely different energy. The prospect feels held. They feel like a decision is clear, not a risk. That certainty does more for the sale than any feature you’ll ever list.
I watch salespeople make this mistake constantly. They prepare for every objection. They memorize scripts. They study the product backward and forward. And then they walk into the conversation half-believing what they’re saying — and none of the preparation matters.
Here’s something I’d recommend. Before your next sales call or conversation, ask yourself honestly: do I believe this is the right thing for this person? Not: do I want the sale. Do I believe in the outcome for them?
If the answer is no — that’s worth examining. Maybe you’re in the wrong product. Maybe you need to understand the client better before you’re in that conversation at all.
If the answer is yes — let that certainty be the thing that leads. Everything else follows.
Until Next Time. Stay Certain.
